Memory Care

Supporting a Loved One With Dementia at Home

Caring for someone with Alzheimer or another form of dementia is an act of deep love, and it can also be exhausting and confusing. The right approach makes daily life calmer for your loved one and more manageable for you. Here are strategies that help.

Build a predictable routine

Familiar routines reduce anxiety and confusion. Try to keep meals, rest, activities, and bedtime at consistent times each day. Predictability gives your loved one a sense of safety, even when memory is fading.

Simplify communication

Speak slowly and warmly, use short sentences, and offer one idea at a time. Make eye contact, use your loved one name, and give them time to respond. If they struggle to find a word, gently fill the gap without correcting or arguing.

Use gentle redirection

When your loved one becomes upset or fixated, arguing rarely helps. Instead, acknowledge the feeling, then gently guide attention toward a calming activity, a snack, or a change of scenery. This technique, sometimes called redirection, prevents many difficult moments.

Plan for the late afternoon

Many people with dementia become more restless or agitated in the late afternoon and evening, a pattern often called sundowning. Keep the home well lit as daylight fades, reduce noise and stimulation, and plan calmer activities for that time of day.

Make the home safer

As dementia progresses, home safety matters more. Reduce clutter, secure dangerous items, consider locks or alarms on exterior doors if wandering is a concern, and keep a clear, familiar path through the home. Our Alzheimer and dementia care service brings trained, patient support to all of this.

Take care of yourself

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Dementia care is a long journey, and burnout is real. Lean on family, accept help, and consider respite care so you can rest and recharge. Caring for yourself is part of caring for your loved one.
